In Mhamad Safa´s recordings, the local history of North Africa and Arabian Peninsula meets the pure digital futurism of global techno. His music is full of violence and conflicts; polyrhythms clashing with pristine sound design and dry drill´n´bass programming, sounding like an algorithm desperately trying to break free from imposed rules set by humans. Safa’s 2022 breathtaking album ‘Ibtihalat’ (released on Lee Gamble´s label UIQ) was created with the help of predictive software and traces the forces of great geographical human movements as well as ritual music and dance traditions stretching into medieval times and beyond.
