James Ruskin and Mark Broom are indisputably two of UK techno’s most significant characters, indispensable to the booming interest in IDM in the 90’s, and founders of the era-defining record labels Blueprint and Pure Plastic. As The Fear Ratio, their experience and credentials are on full display: although the project stretches back to 2011, the pair remain at the top of the game, with 2022’s ‘Slinky’, released through nightlife pathmaker and Berlin institution Tresor, combining outright dancefloor material with out-there hip hop and experimental sound design, and much else besides. Their debut live performance, commissioned uniquely for Lunchmeat Festival 2024, promises to be a standout from this year’s lineup, a deal sweetened even further by Lunchmeat Studio taking the reins on the visual spectacle.
